Everton may well hold the advantage over Newcastle United in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven right-back Denzel Dumfries this summer.

Corriere dello Sport (print edition, July 1, pages 2+3) claims that PSV could now demand as much as €25 million (£21m) for the 25-year-old.

The Toffees are chasing Dumfries according to Corriere dello Sport, but so are the Magpies (The Chronicle).

Right-back is certainly an area where both Premier League clubs need to strengthen.

And what a signing Dumfries would be for either Everton or Newcastle.

The 25-year-old really stood out for Holland during Euro 2020 despite their early exit from the tournament.

Everton hold advantage over Newcastle in Dumfries race?

The Toffees have far greater spending power than Newcastle. It’s not rocket science.

There is surely no way that Newcastle will be paying £21m for a right-back this summer/

However, Everton can easily afford that kind of fee.

The Merseyside club are a far more ambitious outfit than the Tynesiders.

On that basis, Dumfries is likely to be keener to ply his trade at Goodison Park rather than St James’ Park next season.

As things stand, all signs point to the Dutch ace joining Everton. And if that happens, Newcastle missing out on the right-back will be a big blow for Steve Bruce.

Everton’s gain could end up being Newcastle’s loss. Who knows, though? Maybe the Magpies have a surprise up their sleeve.
