A Jamal Musiala-inspired Bayern Munich have taken a huge step towards a ninth Bundesliga title in the row after beating VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 at the Volkswagen Arena.

The teenager struck twice either side of an Eric Choupo-Moting goal as Hansi Flick’s side moved seven points clear at the top.

Scorers: Weghorst 35‘, Philipp 54′; Musiala 15′, 37, Choupo-Moting 24′.

The game started at breakneck speed with Choupo-Moting stinging the palms of Koen Casteels before Wolfsburg went down the other end and tested Manuel Neuer through Ridle Baku’s scuffed effort.

But it was Musiala who would break the deadlock when he made room for an effort at goal through an incredible dribble inside the six-yard box before letting rip. Casteels got a strong hand to the shot and will ponder on whether he should’ve done better.

The Belgian goalkeeper will have been contemplating the same thing for Bayern’s second goal, as he dropped David Alaba’s cross into the path of Choupo-Moting, who duly obliged by tapping home.

But the hosts weren’t going to go down without a fight and Wout Weghorst curled home after Xavier Schalger had intercepted Thomas Müller’s wayward pass in midfield to pull one back.

Musiala restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion almost immediately when he headed home Muller’s cross, but Wolfsburg came back again at the start of the second half when Maximilian Philipp poked home at Neuer’s near post.

The Bavarians hung up to open up another gap on RB Leipzig, and now need just three wins to retain their title.
