Bayern Munich’s Georgia Stanway has opened up about a “difficult time” while playing at Manchester City.

Stanway, one of England’s heroes during their victorious Euro 2022 campaign, completed a transfer to Bayern Munich in May.

The 23-year-old had been at Manchester City for seven years, becoming the team’s all-time top scorer with 57 goals in January.

In an interview with DW Sports, Stanway revealed that it hadn’t always been plain sailing at the club. In fact, a difficult last season prompted the midfielder to look for a move.

Why did Georgia Stanway move to Bayern Munich?

Manchester City endured a turbulent campaign last season, coming back from a torrid start to finish third.

They were ravaged by injury, with a number of the team’s key players on the sidelines for a significant period of time.

With Stanway maintaining her fitness throughout the season, she was used in a number of different positions across the pitch.

“I was in a position where I was being classed as versatile,” she explained. “I was playing in every single position, just trying to do a job for the team, and that’s not something that I wanted.

“That was obviously a really difficult time when you don’t know if you’re coming or going, you don’t know if you’re here or there.

“You’re not able to get any consistency in your game because you’re just classed as ‘a helper.’ It was a case of whatever happened, whatever position I was in, it was just trying to get the best out of it.

“Ultimately, I was able to knuckle down a position for the Euros, it worked out well but it also could have gone the other way.”

How is Georgia Stanway finding life in Germany?

Stanway has made three appearances for Bayern Munich in the Frauen-Bundesliga so far, playing a crucial role in her side’s 4-0 victory against MSV Duisburg yesterday.

She revealed she was settling in well in her new home.

“When you’re picking a team [to move to], there is always going to be that thought at the back of your head of: ‘Have I made the right decision?'” Stanway said. “I honestly haven’t questioned anything once.

“This year is about consistency for me and in this team, it could also be about a bit of leadership, not in the sense of commanding but just in the way I play. I could lead by how I play whether it is a last-ditch tackle or a tackle that is a catalyst [to launch an attack].

“Being unhappy is part and parcel of football but life is too short to just go through the motions and dwell on things. I just want to enjoy my football, enjoy playing in the environment I am in and making sure I’m getting the best out of everything.”
