Real Madrid and Bayern Munich’s weekend ahead of the all-important second leg could not be more polar.

Los Blancos were proclaimed champions of La Liga after beating Cadiz and watching Barcelona go down against Girona, while the Bavarians went down 3-1 to VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

The reverse fixture on Wednesday, thus, sees two teams with contrasting momentum face off at the Santiago Bernabeu, although it is well known that momentum is not necessarily a factor in the Champions League.

Updates from the German camp

As revealed yesterday, Thomas Tuchel was forced to withdraw Raphael Guerreiro in just the 16th minute against Stuttgart after the defender suffered an injury.

Now, the German giants have officially confirmed the same via their X handle, confirming that the player will be unavailable to face Real Madrid midweek.

There is, however, a silver lining for Bayern Munich’s defence as well as star defender Matthijs de Ligt was seen returning to training with the group earlier today.

The Dutchman has been out of action since being withdrawn in the team’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt last month. His return, needless to say, will be a massive boost for the visitors on Wednesday as he could even start in central defence.

Focus on the semifinal

The atmosphere in Madrid is rather stale, for the mood is far from celebratory despite the official announcement of Real Madrid’s La Liga title.

After all, the men in white have their minds completely focused on the upcoming clash against the German giants. After a 2-2 draw at Allianz Arena where they were forced to defend deep, Real Madrid will look to get the job done in 90 minutes at the Bernabeu.

From Ancelotti’s perspective, he has an almost fully fit squad at his disposal and it remains to be seen if he trusts either Eder Militao or Thibaut Courtois with minutes on the night.
