Bayern Munich lead the race to sign Manchester United transfer target Dayot Upamecano

A report by German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Mirror) states that Bayern Munich want to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano for a transfer fee lower than his release clause amidst interest from Manchester United.

Upamecano has a £37million release clause that activates in the summer. Bayern are also not the only club interested in him, with Liverpool and Manchester United both after the French defender.

And the German club are aware that signing Upamecano for a fee lower than his release clause would be difficult. Hence, they have asked his agents to inform Bayern when any other club tries to activate his release clause. (h/t Mirror)

In such a situation, the German champions would be willing to pay the full release clause for the 22-year-old. So according to this, if the Red Devils were to trigger his clause, they would be beaten to it by Bayern.

A big setback?

Bayern target Upamecano as they are desperate to find a replacement for David Alaba and Jerome Boateng, both of whom could leave the Allianz Arena in the near future. (h/t Mirror)

This is certainly not good news for United if their interest in Upamecano is real. Upamecano is a major part of the Leipzig team that has done so well this season.

They are 3rd in the table, just 4 points away from Bayern. And Julian Nagelsmann’s side have the best defence in the league by far. Upamecano has featured in 15 of their 16 league games.

United currently have the pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the heart of their defence. Eric Bailly has also impressed in recent times, but there is no real threat to the duo’s starting position.

The French centre-back would provide just that and could even become a starter straightaway at the club.
