A headline member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona is continuing to stall on providing a definitive response to a contract offer laid out by the club late last year.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Frenkie de Jong as the player in question.

Dutchman De Jong has of course been hotly tipped to depart Barcelona this coming summer, amid ongoing efforts on the part of the Blaugrana board to raise funds for incomings.

The 26-year-old, for his part, remains adamant that he will be going nowhere, eager only to prove himself in Catalunya’s capital.

And yet, Barca’s work towards tying De Jong down to what they deem a more appropriate contract has been met with radio silence.

That’s according to the aforementioned Sport, who detail that Deco first made contact with the entourage of the former Ajax man last October, to lay out the terms of a new deal.

This comes with De Jong’s current contract due to expire in 2026.

‘To that first proposal from Deco, the player still does not respond, preferring to wait…’

Should an answer not be forthcoming by the summer, Barcelona are ready to actively push for a sale, but with De Jong desperate to stay put, something of a falling out could well be on the cards.
