FC Barcelona have already made their first signing of the summer 2025 with the acquisition of the RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia after paying his €25 million release clause.
This new addition will have significant implications for the goalkeeping position in the Blaugrana team, as Marc-Andre ter Stegen will now be the third-placed goalie in the squad, as Wojciech Szczesny is going to be the back-up and Garcia the starter.
After Garcia’s signing, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are now working to address the situation of several of their defensive players.
In the goalkeeping position, the Catalans have already agreed a renewal with Szczesny; however, it has not yet been officially announced by the club. The Pole is currently also waiting to see whether Ter Stegen’s contract will be terminated.
In the backline, Jules Kounde has a contract till 2027, and although there is no rush in this regard, the Blaugranes still want to extend this contract for another season. The two parties are getting on well at the moment, but this exact operation is not being addressed as urgent.
However, Barcelona are working more diligently on ensuring the renewal of Eric Garcia, as it is expiring in 2026, and Joan Laporta does not want any of his players to leave for free next year. The Blaugrana club assures that talks are underway, but the defender’s entourage is not too keen for an agreement.
There is also some work being done on Inigo Martinez. The veteran centre-back has already extended his contract for one year, till 2026, but the Blaugrana club will have to negotiate for any further extension.
Andreas Christensen’s contract also expires in 2026, but Barcelona have already opened the door to his departure this summer. For now, it remains to be seen where the Dane will be playing for the next season.
