FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé left the field early yesterday in La Blaugrana‘s La Liga fixture against fellow Catalans Girona FC. After a sprint, the 25-year-old appeared to be in pain. He made way for Pedri, who scored the game’s only goal in the 61st minute.

In a press release, Barcelona provided an update on the Frenchman’s injury.

“(Ousmane Dembélé) has a rectus femoris injury in his left thigh. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability.”

Dembélé’s form had seen a resurgence this campaign after several hit-and-miss seasons marked by extended periods on the sidelines. After recovering from a knee injury early in 2021, the former Stade Rennais man registered a goal and 13 assists in just 21 games for the Catalans in the Spanish top flight last season. Before today’s injury, he had played in all but one of Barcelona’s 28 games in all competitions this season, accruing eight goals and seven assists.

Dembélé’s newest injury could not have come at a worse time for Barcelona, who are set to play an in-form Manchester United side in the Europa League in just over two weeks’ time. The winger is now a serious doubt for the Spanish giants in their quest for European success. Their grip on the Spanish title is perhaps more encouraging: they sit six points clear of second-place Real Madrid as the season approaches its halfway point.
