Barcelona cannot seem to rid themselves of their injury woes since the beginning of this campaign.

Having lost Ronald Araujo and Pedri to injuries of late, with Inigo Martinez also grappling to return to full fitness, it looks as though Danish defender Andreas Christensen has also not been able to get to his absolute best physically.

Christensen established himself as one of the cornerstones of Barcelona’s title-winning defence last season, but he has had his fair share of physical discomfort to deal with from the tail end of last season.

Christensen still struggling for fitness

According to reports from SPORT, Christensen being on the bench for Denmark’s EURO qualifier against San Marino was pre-meditated.

The central defender, naturally, one of the key defenders for the nation was expected to feature tonight but his exclusion took fans by surprise.

However, as Toni Juanmarti says, Christensen was on the bench due to an agreement between Barcelona and the Danish federation, as he has still been battling a small niggle.

Although Joao Cancelo’s signing and the return of Inigo Martinez have reinforced Barcelona’s backline in Araujo’s absence, Christensen missing out on any more game time will be a huge miss especially with the Champions League coming up.

Injuries to key players derailed the Catalans’ European campaign last year and there is no reason for history to repeat itself.

Although Christensen is not unfit to feature and wants to help out the team, his soleus is still bothering him and he has been advised to take as much rest as possible to avoid muscle overload.
