Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has refuted the ‘trophy logic’ after La Dea clinched their first ever Europa League title in history after beating Bayer Leverkusen.

History was written in Dublin, as Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak finally broke and Atalanta won their first ever major title in 62 years and their first ever European title in history. Gasperini also won his first ever trophy and his wait for a piece of silverware came to an end, deservedly so.

After the win Gasperini was asked about the importance of the title win and he told Sky (via TMW) that a trophy doesn’t make him better or worse than he was, thereby refuting the ‘trophy logic’ in the sport.

“I don’t understand this thing about being judged by trophies. It’s not like I’m any better now than I was this afternoon.”

Further, the Italian said: “I think we wrote history, also for the way we won. Extraordinary, we repeated Liverpool, Lisbon… Sporting they won the league, when we faced Liverpool they were first in the Premier League… Incredible. The boys were extraordinary, a memorable performance.”

Atalanta’s win means that as many as six Italian teams can play in the Champions League next season, if La Dea finish fifth in the Serie A.
