Ousmane Dembele’s Barcelona career is essentially over. In midweek, club Sporting Director Mateu Alemany told the Frenchman that “he has to leave” owing to him not extending his contract.

He has reportedly refused to make a move in the summer, arguing that he is “not a man who cheats,” however Alemany will try to fix a move before the 31st of January.

According to an official press release by Barcelona via Twitter, Dembele was a no-show in training today, because of a supposed stomach illness. However, a report by AS states that the Garnet and Blue are likely to hand him a fine for missing training. Noone at the club believes his reasoning, and could thus be served with a penalty.

Dembele has been at Barcelona since the summer of 2017. He joined the club from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of €120 million. He has struggled to hit the highs that were expected of him since his arrival,. With 129 games to his name, he has scored just 31 goals and provided 23 assists for the Catalans in all competitions.

The Frenchman being late, or fined for poor behaviour, is nothing new to the Blaugrana. He has done this previously in 2017 at Dortmund before joining Barça. On numerous other occasions in 2018, 2019, as well as 2021 this season, he has been rightfully fined. This recent supposed stomach issue might end up with yet another sanction from the club.

The sort of misdemeanour from his part has resulted in the club completely abandoning him from their future endeavours. Xavi Hernandez specifically left him out of the squad list for the game against Athletic Club and then for tonight’s game against Deportivo Alaves, as he wants only players committed to his project.

The exclusion is something numerous figures close to the club, such as Hristo Stoichkov were happy to see.

For Dembele, it is only a matter of time before he leaves. The Frenchman has interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea. Barcelona will hope that they can part ways with him as soon as possible.
