In a major development, FC Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has announced on social media that he will undergo surgery to address his back problem.
The 33-year-old German international returned to Barcelona after vacation earlier this month but has been unable to train with the group due to discomfort in his back.
Ter Stegen did not participate in a single group training session and worked inside the gym facilities, undergoing conservative treatment for the problem.
However, with things not working out, the possibility of surgery was raised, which could sideline the goalkeeper for four months.
Having taken his time to mull over the situation, Ter Stegen has now finally announced that he will undergo surgery on his back.
Taking to social media, Ter Stegen wrote: “Dear Culers, I wear the colours and jersey of FC Barcelona with great pride, whether on or off the pitch, in moments of success and in difficult times.
“Today is a personally difficult day for me. Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain.”
“After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.”
Interestingly, Ter Stegen mentioned in his statement that doctors expect him to be out for three months – not four as was reported initially.
“After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days—almost two months; this time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks.
“Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear.
“I will keep you updated on my recovery and I sincerely want to thank you all, dear Culers, for always being by my side. Don’t worry—I’ll be back!”
If the German is out for only three months, Barcelona will not be able to make use of his absence to register their new signing Joan Garcia by utilising 80% of their captain’s salary space – as was done with Wojciech Szczesny and Dani Olmo last year.
The statement also makes it clear that Ter Stegen will not be leaving Barcelona this summer.
