A 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

A lot has been said about this match in the aftermath, not very much of it positive, if at all.

Which is fair enough, Newcastle United didn’t play well and Crystal Palace did.

However, some of what has been said and written, is an absolute embarrassment.

Out and out attention seekers amongst the Newcastle United fanbase declaring it was an ‘absolute disgrace and a ‘total embarrassment’.

No, it is you who are totally embarrassing.

Especially some of the usual suspects online, especially YouTube as well as other social media, who would literally sell their soul to the devil if it gained them a few more clicks.

It happens after pretty much any defeat, these characters knowing they have to go even more extreme than the other embarrassing characters, in terms of the over the top criticism and abuse of the Newcastle United players and Eddie Howe, in order to try and be noticed, to get the attention they desperately crave. Plus of course cash in many instances, the more extreme you slaughter Eddie Howe and the players, the more people will read/watch, the more money that brings.

You see/hear comments such as ‘the players weren’t trying’ and so on.

It is an absolute disgrace that any Newcastle United fans would be accusing this group of players of deliberately not trying.

A big problem as well is that with this Palace game not being (legally) available to watch on TV, it means far less Newcastle United fans will actually have seen for themselves what happened. So sadly, plenty of them will just automatically believe what these shameless attention seekers are claiming, in the pursuit of clicks/views.

The reality is that we invariably struggle for both wins and goals at Selhurst Park, indeed, United have only won once there in the Premier League since 2013 and that was a Brucey fluke, two goals in the last two minutes in 2020. The games typically end 0-0 or 1-1 there and it feels like a pitch that is far smaller and far less room than say St James’ Park (I don’t know whether the actual measurements back this up?), where it becomes an intense midfield battle with space and chances difficult to come by.

Last season backs this up, Newcastle United finishing top four but unable to win or even score a goal in a goalless draw at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle United lost a football match on Wednesday night and were clear second best BUT that does not automatically make it a disgrace or embarrassment.

Just because somehow Eddie Howe made this Newcastle United team look like a team of world beaters against Tottenham, it doesn’t actually mean they are a team of… world beaters.

It is quite ludicrous that these embarrassing characters basically turn on Eddie Howe and his players, because they played so well against Tottenham. As in, how can they play so well against Spurs and yet be so poor against Crystal Palace?

Well, a big part of this is, astonishingly, because Crystal Palace played so well. Yes, that’s right, there is another team on the pitch who are also doing their level best to win as well.

Palace have had a poor season but now have their best and most dangerous players back available, they had just won at Anfield and put five past West Ham, the first consecutive PL wins this season for them, those wins putting them safe from relegation, now in front of their own fans under the lights, no pressure at last and the freedom to express themselves. This was NEVER going to be an easy game for Newcastle United.

Palace pressed Newcastle from the first whistle and never gave us any time or space. Oliver Glasner admitted that after 30 minutes he was worried that the entire team would need to be subbed by 60 minutes, due to the amount of energy and intensity they were putting into the game.

However, the adrenaline kept pumping and then when they got the lead ten minutes into the second half, that just ensured the adrenaline kept flowing and their energy levels stayed high, though no as high. Newcastle came into the game more but the damage was done, a goal down and as I said earlier, a ground/pitch where there appears so little space and often so difficult to create chances. Then bad luck and/or bad officiating saw United denied a very clear penalty on Longstaff when 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go. If that is given, Newcastle United don’t lose. It wasn’t given and we did lose, it is so often fine margins.

To be honest, the previous away game was another that most Newcastle United fans wouldn’t have seen live and was actually very similar to this Palace one. The non-televised Fulham match saw the home side batter us for the first 30 minutes or so in particular, again, we somehow got to half-time goalless. However, the difference was that we didn’t concede early second half and instead grew and grew into the match as Fulham couldn’t sustain the earlier energy / adrenaline levels, eventually running out arguably the deserved winners. As Newcastle created the best chances and despite a woeful refereeing / VAR decision going against us in that game, we swiftly followed with a Bruno goal that did win the match. Dubravka didn’t really have a difficult save to make in that Fulham game for all their first half pressure and indeed against Palace it was a similar story. Dubravka didn’t make a difficult save and Palace scored with their only two big threatening efforts on goal and even one of those went through the NUFC keeper’s legs.

Also, when we see what the shameless and embarrassing attention seekers are coming out with after the Palace match, they are totally ignoring the reality.

The front three of Isak, Gordon and Barnes are all quality players but were starved of service and ended up defending most of the time, as United couldn’t control the match/ball.

Who in the rest of the team, the midfield and defence, were top quality players in reality? The likes of Krafth and Murphy have to play at their optimum levels to get close to being what we need, same as Dubravka. Then you have Burn, Longstaff and Anderson, he is going to be an excellent player but reality is that he was only making his tenth Premier League start.

So I would only pick out Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes as the real current top quality players we had available in the engine room at the back. That doesn’t mean the likes of Burn, Longstaff and others haven’t done well for Newcastle, but would any of them be regular starters for any top six side, or even top half?

Eddie Howe said after the game that he’d only had around 12 first team squad players available to train ahead of the match, THAT is the reality the attention seekers choose to ignore.

On the night the team basically picked itself and that included the likes of Dubravka, Krafth in a three man defence, as well as Murphy playing as a right back / right wing back.

This was a match where we needed to win the battle before we could win the match.

It was most definitely a game where we needed the likes of Pope, Trippier and Botman at the back.

Then Joelinton, Tonali and Willock in midfield.

At times Newcastle’s midfield was getting bullied, same in defence to an extent. With the likes of Trippier, Joelinton, Botman and Tonali on the pitch, that wouldn’t have happened.

Newcastle overwhelmed Tottenham, they are a bit of a soft touch in midfield, Palace weren’t.

For those who think Newcastle United should have easily won on Wednesday night, count up in reality just how many of the Newcastle players on show, would get into a combined team. Put it this way, there wouldn’t be much in it. When you put into the equation the fact that Palace were at home and their renewed confidence and best players available, whilst Newcastle had do many missing. Reality is, this was always a match that was in the balance.
