In a recent report, El Periodico Mediterraneo revealed that Aston Villa are close to signing Villarreal defender Pau Torres this summer. It has been stated that the Villans are on the verge of securing the services of the Spanish centre-back.

Torres’ Decent Run Of Form In La Liga Last Season

Torres had a solid campaign with the Yellow Submarine in the previous campaign when he produced a series of dominant displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 26-year-old scored one goal and picked up 11 yellow cards in 39 matches for Villarreal last season in various competitions.

The Villarreal-born talent was a rock at the back and deserves a ton of credit for averaging 1.3 tackles and 4.1 clearances per game in La Liga. He even distributed the ball with conviction from the back after completing 85.3% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top-flight (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the Spanish club will run out at the end of next season. Thus, it is no surprise that the Villans are moving in for him this summer.

What Will Torres Bring To Aston Villa?

Torres can get stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life difficult for the opposition attackers. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball to clear the danger when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.91m, the Spanish talent is a dominant presence in the air as well. Hence, he would be a great acquisition for Aston Villa if they manage to get him on board this summer.

We can expect Torres to bring a lot of bite and steel to Unai Emery‘s defence at Villa Park. He might even help the Villans push for a European spot in the upcoming Premier League campaign.

At 26, Torres is about to enter his prime and is well-equipped to make an instant impact at the West Midlands club. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physicality and high intensity of English football. Still, there is no denying that the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of Torres’ skillet.
