Neal Maupay and Dwight McNeil both went close early for Everton with a flurry of chances in quick succession but were foiled by a combination of defenders and goalkeeper.

Lewis Dobbin and Stanley Mills also had decent chances for the opener but failed to make the breakthrough in a scoreless first half.

Again, the Toffees started the second half on the front foot, with Maupay sweeping straight into the goalkeeper’s grateful arms when picked out unmarked in the centre of the area by Nathan Patterson.

The Scot then set up Abdoulaye Doucouré for an identical opportunity moments later a fantastic Jordan Pickford pass and although the midfielder’s effort was better, he was denied by the crossbar.

But Everton eventually got the goal they deserved on 64 minutes for what proved to be the winner as Young marked his debut with a goal, finishing emphatically into the roof of the net after his initial attempt was blocked.

Next up is a clash with Bolton on Tuesday night.
