AmĂ©rica remain bottom of Liga MX as Fernando Ortiz’s first game in charge ends in defeat at Monterrey.

Scorers: Campbell 38â€Č, Funes 48â€Č; Fidalgo 34â€Č

Life under new interim manager Fernando Ortiz got off to a disjointed start as América travelled to fellow bottom dwellers, Monterrey. Los Azul-Cremas struggled to keep hold of the ball and were put under some early pressure as the hosts tested Guillermo Ochoa, though mostly from range.

Against the run of play, América found the breakthrough in the 34th minute when Álvaro Fidalgo headed home from a Diego Valdés freekick. There was more than a hint of offside but after a lengthy VAR check the Spanish midfielder was awarded his goal.

The lead, however, lasted only four minutes as Rogelio Funes rose highest to put a powerful header on target.

Funes’ header was saved by Ochoa but the veteran Mexican goalkeeper could only push the ball back into a dangerous area where former-Arsenal forward Joel Campbell was on hand to slot home via a heavy deflection.

Up front, Funes carried a threat all night for Monterrey and the 31-yer-old got on the score sheet three minutes after the break, lashing home from close range for his third goal of the Liga MX Clausura season.

América pushed throughout the second half, putting an immense amount of pressure on the Monterrey goal but were unable to fashion too many clear cut chances.

Las Aguilas’ woes continue as, with this defeat, they remain in bottom place but their opponents, Monterrey, pull away climbing seven positions into tenth place.

Ortiz now has a week to regroup and attempt to find some solutions to this ever worsening season for América.
