Eredivisie outfit Ajax have submitted an enquiry to Burnley regarding the availability of Wout Weghorst, according to Voetbal International.

The average relegated side would have a lot to sort out over the summer, especially a team like the Clarets who were disappointing for much of last season despite their big spending.

However, they have retained much of their first-team squad, activating buy options on some of their loanees and also taking extension options on some of their other first-teamers.

Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Taylor, meanwhile, were both offered new contracts and Rodriguez has already put pen to paper to extend his stay at Turf Moor.

With plenty of first-teamers being retained, their focus may be on keeping some of their key stars and selling those who they are keen to offload in the coming months.

Their midfield may require more depth, with Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson leaving.

They may also want to take a look at their forward department, with the Clarets seemingly confirming that they won't be pursuing another move for David Datro Fofana following his return to parent club Chelsea.

One other striker could be on his way out of Turf Moor this summer.

Ajax eyeing Wout Weghorst move

It has been reported that the Dutch giants have submitted an enquiry to the Clarets ahead of a potential bid for the experienced forward.

The 31-year-old could be available on a free transfer or for a small fee, according to Voetbal International, which would make sense considering he has rarely played for the Clarets.

The Lancashire side aren't in the strongest negotiating position either, with the player having just one year left on his contract.

He may have enjoyed success away from Turf Moor, thriving for Besiktas last term and also spending time at English top-tier giants Manchester United, but it doesn't look as though he will be sold for a huge amount in the coming weeks.

Spending last term at Hoffenheim and doing fairly well in Germany, he has seemingly done enough to generate interest from Ajax, although their interest isn't fully "concrete" yet despite their enquiry.

Selling Wout Weghorst would be an ideal outcome for Burnley and the player

The Clarets could benefit from selling Weghorst, who may not want to compete in the Championship.

If he doesn't, his performance levels aren't likely to be brilliant during the 2024/25 season if he stays put, so it may benefit the club to offload him in the coming months.

Selling the Dutchman should also create room on the wage bill and it may boost their summer transfer budget slightly, which will be important for Vincent Kompany's successor.

The player may also benefit from moving away from Turf Moor, with the player unlikely to be happy about moving on loan frequently.

At 31, he needs a permanent club to settle down at and this summer feels like the right time for him to secure a longer-term switch away from Lancashire.
