Burnley will be targeting a position in the automatic spots next year in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League.

The transfer window will play a key part in their hopes with outgoings necessary for the Clarets if they are to bring in new additions.

A player who will surely be one of these departures is striker Wout Weghorst, who is currently away on international duty with the Netherlands for Euro 2024.

Since signing back in January 2022 for a reported fee of £12 million, he has played just 20 times for the Clarets and has been out on loan on three different occasions to Besiktas, Manchester United and TSG Hoffenheim.

His late winner against Poland may have once again sparked interest in him, and one of the clubs that are keen to sign the towering target man are Dutch giants Ajax, as per a report from The Telegraph.

It will be interesting to see the fee that Burnley demand with just 12 months on his contract, and if he continues to excel at the European Championships, his value will undoubtedly increase, prompting the Clarets' hierarchy to closely monitor Weghorst's progress.

Burnley should not look to sell Wout Weghorst for a cut-price fee amid Ajax interest

Despite the fact Weghorst was unwilling to play in the Championship two seasons ago, FLW's Burnley fan pundit Ben Livingstone would actually like to see the Netherlands striker stick around if possible, but if it isn't achievable he believes that no cut-price fee should be entertained, irrespective of his contract situation.

"He's had a fantastic tournament so far at the Euro's, and did alright last season back in the Bundesliga," Ben told Football League World.

"For me, I would love to keep him but in terms of a transfer fee I wouldn't entertain any cut-price fees and would be looking for €7 million, which would be about £5-6 million."

Whilst to the naked eye this would be seen as a loss on the fee Burnley paid for him, Ben was quick to share why the Clarets would be making a profit.

"At the end of the day, we have probably got most of his money back from loan fees to United and Besiktas, and we haven't had to pay his wages as well," Ben added.

Burnley have played Wout Weghorst's situation smartly

Whilst on-field Weghorst has never been able to pay off his transfer fee, the Burnley hierarchy has been smart about how they dealt with his performances.

It would have been easy to sell him in the summer of 2022 after a disappointing six months, but sending him out on loan has meant that Weghorst hasn't proved to be an excessive financial burden.

With reports linking him to a move back to his home country, Burnley will be hopeful that a suitable offer will arrive before the window shuts on August 30th.

Having not featured for the club in two years now, his exit would prove a minimal blow and would free up wages and provide funds for possible new additions.

Letting his contract run into the final 12 months risks losing him for nothing in 2025, so a summer sale seems the most likely outcome.
