For starters, the obvious, Daizen Maeda’s winning penalty secured a 119th trophy in Celtic’s 137-year decorated history. Daizen was one of Celtic’s star performers yet again yesterday and his piece of individual brilliance in the second half was his fourth strike against theRangers in three years.

Crucially, a 22nd Scottish League Cup win for Celtic, and a fourth for boss Brendan Rodgers. It was a lucky number 13th win at Hampden Park for Rodgers, whose second home has become quite the fortress over his two spells in Glasgow.

Against theRangers, it was the Irishman’s 20th Glasgow Derby. Extending his incredible return to 16 wins in the fixture, Rodgers has only lost one game against the Ibrox club.

If you start the timescale at when Brendan walked through the doors of Paradise in the summer of 2016, the Hoops have won 20 of their 119 trophies since then – which is 17% of our trophy haul in eight and a half years.

Landmark achievements were broken for two of Celtic’s most decorated squad members following their iconic League Cup win over theRangers.

Callum McGregor maintained his record of winning every domestic cup final he has played in his footballing career, making it trophy number 23 in green and white Hoops.

The legend that is James Forrest landed his own remarkable 25th winners medal for the Celts going level with the legendary Bobby Lennox. A league or Scottish Cup triumph in May next year would make Forrest Celtic’s most decorated ever player.

Meanwhile, it was a first trophy in Celtic colours for penalty shootout hero Kasper Schmeichel – the Great Dane has faced over 115 penalties in his career including shutting out the likes of Mo Salah, Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, Luka Modric, Robin Van Persie, and now, arguably the most significant, Ridvan Yilmaz. Averaging one save in four from the spot in his glittering career, the 38 year-old gave Celtic a helping hand at Hampden.

It was not just an inaugural trophy triumph at the Hoops for Kasper. Added to that list were finalist debutants Auston Trusty, Alex Valle and Arne Engels, all who received winners medals for the first time as Celtic players.

On the other hand, current Ibrox skipper James Tavernier has been at theRangers for nine years, four months and 27 days. In comparison, Adam Idah has been at Celtic for a combined 320 days. During that period both have won the same number of trophies – three.

That is now Tavernier’s seventh runners-up medal as theRangers’ captain when directly competing against Celtic. If you want to include Eintracht Frankfurt’s also hilarious penalty shootout victory in the 2022 Europa League final then that would make it eight silver medals for the right-back. Whether you want to include that match or not is entirely up to you…

Merry Christmas. Disappointed after the Premier Sports Cup Final between Celtic and theRangers at Hampden Park on December 15, 2024. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)

For Phillipe Clement, his Glasgow Derby record got that bit worse at 20 past six yesterday evening. Now facing Rodgers on six occasions, the Belgian has lost five and drawn once versus the Scottish champions in 14 months. But it was 3-3 at Hampden. So, despite his side’s cruel defeat on penalties, will Clement be claiming another moral victory?

And with the first leg of three complete for the campaign, are Celtic on course for an historic ninth Treble? What a second half of the season we are in for.
