Ibrahim Afellay is backing Ajax coach Erik ten Hag for the Manchester United job.

Former Barcelona midfielder Afellay, who retired from playing last year at the age of just 33, says now is the ideal time for Ten Hag to move to Old Trafford.

"I would definitely go, if he can bend it to his will," Afellay told Studio Voetbal.

"If you are to believe the reports, he has certain requirements and that is only a good thing.

"Otherwise he shouldn't make the move. There is no better time to get in.

"It looks like they are not going to qualify for the Champions League."

However, there are still several hurdles for United to jump to ensure that they get their man. That is because Ten Hag is believed to want assurances over recruitment and the way that the club is run on a day-to-day basis, amongst other things.
