90min's 2021/22 WSL team of the season | OneFootball

We have just witnessed the biggest and best WSL season to date.

More eyes were on the league than ever before thanks to the advent of the broadcasting deal with Sky Sports and BBC, while the quality on the pitch rose to the occasion. Even the level of competitiveness was a sight to behold as the gaps between the top and bottom closed, adding a previously absent unpredictability to every game right until the final day.

Chelsea eventually lifted the title - their third in a row - but Arsenal were leading until the closing weeks, while Manchester City and Manchester United were battling for third until the final day. Other clubs like Tottenham rose above expectations, while Everton sank down the standings.

WSL team of the season - 2021/22

GK: Mary Earps (Man Utd): Her form this season has led her to getting back into the England setup and establishing herself as confirmed number one for Euro 2022 this summer. A leader in what remains a largely inexperienced United side and that has been so important.

RB: Ashleigh Neville (Tottenham): The Spurs full-back produced her best ever season for the WSL's surprise club, who recorded their highest finish and points tally. She has added goals to her game, was Barclays player of the month in February and landed a new long-term contract.

CB: Millie Bright (Chelsea): The England star really stepped up as a leader for her club this season, especially when captain Magdalena Eriksson was ruled with injury. Strong and powerful but also perhaps slightly underrated when it comes to playing with the ball.

CB: Alex Greenwood (Man City): Arguably now one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in the WSL and across Europe. It is a skillset that can often make her like an extra midfielder, while her reading of the game defensively has also been outstanding all year.

LB: Guro Reiten (Chelsea): Has typically played as a left wing-back this season but needs to fit in this team somehow because of the numbers she has put up - 12 direct goal involvements this term - including two on the decisive final day alone.

RM: Beth Mead (Arsenal): This season saw her set a new all-time WSL record for assists, breaking the previous mark by league legend Karen Carney. She set the tone for a top campaign from day one with a match-winning performance against Chelsea and was consistently superb throughout.

CM: Jessie Fleming (Chelsea): Eased into the Chelsea side last season and played more of a peripheral role, but has blossomed into an integral part of team this term. The Canadian's energy, drive, versatility and eye for goal have made her a huge asset and major part of Chelsea's success.

CM: Ella Toone (Man Utd): Stepped into a senior role for a developing side this season and ran with it. She has become an established England starter and finished the club campaign with 15 goal involvements in the WSL - including a joint league-leading eight assists.

LM: Lauren Hemp (Man City): Remains alarmingly consistent at the highest level. This season yielded another 10 WSL goals, plus six assists, and she was often unplayable as her team put together an unbelievable run to surge into third place.

ST: Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal): Switched between 'number nine' and 'number 10' roles for the Gunners this season but has been a master at both. Continued to play on another level to most and either scored or assisted on average one per game.

ST: Sam Kerr (Chelsea): The Blues owe her their title, it is as simple as that. She scored an average of one goal per game, including so many that were absolutely crucial to gaining points - on the final day alone, two world class finishes were the difference against Manchester United.
