Charlton Athletic will have three former players, including two academy graduates, at Euro 2024 in Germany as part of Gareth Southgate's England squad.

England will go into the UEFA European Championship this summer as one of the favourites to win the tournament. The Three Lions fell just short of glory during the most recent Euros, losing against Italy on penalties at Wembley in 2021.

Charlton did not have any former players included in England's squad for that competition, but that will not be the case this time around.

England boss Southgate has named three former Addicks in his squad for the upcoming Euros - Joe Gomez, Ezri Konsa and Conor Gallagher.

Gomez made his Charlton debut in an EFL Cup victory over Colchester United at the age of just 17. A week later, he made his first Championship appearance in a 3-2 win over Derby County at The Valley. The 27-year-old joined Liverpool for £3.5m in 2015, going on to win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League under Jurgen Klopp.

He made his England debut in 2017 and has 15 caps for his country.

Aston Villa defender Konsa also made his Charlton debut as a teenager, and played 86 times for the club before joining Brentford in the summer of 2018. He went on to join Villa in a £12m move and has been a key part of Unai Emery's team that achieved a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

Gallagher spent the first half of the 2019/20 season on loan at The Valley from his current club, Chelsea. The midfielder scored six goals and provided four assists in Charlton colours, before being recalled in January and sent on loan to Swansea City. Charlton were ultimately relegated in the final moments of the season and have been stuck in League One ever since.

The Addicks will take pride in the fact that two players who came through the ranks at Sparrows Lane will represent England on the international stage at a major tournament.

Charlton might have had another ex-player at Euro 2024

There was plenty of speculation around whether Brentford striker Ivan Toney would be included by Southgate, but the 28-year-old made the final 26-man England squad.

He could have been the fourth former Charlton player in the England camp this summer, had a bid of £4m not been rejected by Peterborough United at the end of the summer transfer window in 2019.

Lee Bowyer, who was the Addicks' boss at the time, wanted Toney to partner Lyle Taylor up front as Charlton returned to the second tier after beating Sunderland in the League One play-off final a few months earlier.

However, the Posh rejected the approach for their main man. Charlton suffered an immediate return to League One on the final day after top-scorer Taylor refused to play following the Covid break through fear of sustaining an injury and jeopardising his "life-changing" move to Nottingham Forest.

While Charlton fans might have had another former player to cheer on during the Euros, they will be looking forward to watching Gallagher and the club's academy graduates compete to win England's first major international trophy since 1966.
