Job done! We won 3-1 in the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup against FC Dornbirn. The regional league side put up a brave defensive battle and pushed us all the way until two goals from substitutes in the second half ensured a deserved win for our Red Bulls. We also had the very welcome return of Moussa Yeo in the final few minutes.
Thomas Letsch announced ahead of the match his intention to rotate the squad against the regional league opponents. The hosts focused on defending with their five at the back, but tried to attack when they got the chance to launch long balls.
The underdogs really tried to rattle us, but after five minutes of play, we were well in charge. It was not easy against such a determined defensive unit, however. We threatened from corners in particular, and the breakthrough came from distance in the 20th minute. Kerim Alajbegovic delivered one of his already notorious long-range efforts to send the ball straight into the top right. Five minutes later, Enrique Aguilar had a go with a promising shot from a similar position - and Dornbirn goalkeeper Morscher had to push it over the goal (25'). The chances then came by the minute, including from Daghim (28' and 29') and a deflected Terzic cross (30').
Then what can so often happen came - as we failed to use our chances, the goal came out of nowhere at the other end of the field. The visitors won a corner at the other end, and Makovec sent a diving header in for an equaliser (40'). Dornbirn were clearly abuzz as they started the second half on level terms, but we soon took command, albeit we lacked the clinical touch. We gained a good opportunity to take the lead when Eddie Baidoo smashed the post shortly after the restart (53').
Under challenging conditions with the rain lashing down our coach sent on some fresh legs with four changes - and these paid off. A perfectly placed Lainer cross was finished with a superb Ratkov header (70'). Taking the lead again took the wind out of the hosts' sails, and one chance kept following the other. Yorbe Vertessen then sealed the victory by smashing in after Rasmussen drilled the ball across (83'). The final fond moment wasn't a goal, but the sight of Moussa Yeo making his comeback from the substitutes' bench after being sidelined since April (85')!
We will find out in September who were are to face in the cup last 16. We are going back on the hunt for ADMIRAL Bundesliga points this weekend at home. Kick-off is against FC Blau-Weiß Linz on Saturday 30 August at 17:00 CEST in the Red Bull Arena.
It was a classic cup match against defensive opponents. It was frustrating that we conceded a goal from a corner, as we lost concentration for a moment – but that can happen. Overall, though, we played a very solid game. We should certainly have gone into the break at least 2-0 up, and we could have made things easier for ourselves towards the end. We're delighted to have made the next round!

They sat very deep, which isn't easy because you have to remain patient and find the right moment. We certainly found that with my goal. Of course, we could have scored more goals, but in the end it's a good, solid 3-1 win – and we're through to the next round!
