10 Year Later, Dortmund Wins in Munich | OneFootball

After three strong wins in a row, Bayern welcomed Borussia Dortmund for the most empty and meaningless Der Klassiker of the last 12 years. Without either of the teams having a clear chance of winning the Bundesliga, a lot of injuries, and with both teams in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League, it was pretty clear that neither of them had a lot to play for today.

But it was also clear that BVB wanted way more than Bayern to take the win back to Dortmund and knew that this Bayern wasn’t the same that beat them again and again in Munich over the years. With a lot of desire and willingness in every duel and two counter attack goals, by Adeyemi and Ryerson, the visitors deservedly got their first win in Munich in 10 years and celebrated heavily at the end of the match.

THINGS WE NOTICED:

No Pavlović, No Party

It’s impressive how much the team missed Pavlović’s presence in the midfield today, Laimer and Goreztka didn’t manage to support the attack, didn’t manage to protect the defense and lost pretty much most of the duels in the middle of the field. The first goal was a simple counter attack that should have been stopped at least 3 times before the ball reached the box, but both Bayern midfielders simply couldn’t stop the play. If the young German-Croatian is healthy, he needs to start every match.

Toothless Attack

Today Bayern had almost 70% of possession, and only had two shots on target, that illustrates just how nonthreatening the Bavarians were during the match. Müller, Musiala and Sané (as usual since January) all had terrible performances on the pitch. Even Kane was really bad today, without appearing much during the match and worse missing some promising chances.

More Questions than Answers

Despite Bayern coming into today on a five game unbeaten streak and on the back of good displays against Lazio, Mainz and Darmstadt, with the team seeming to show a clearer structure, today was the time to return to earth again. Dier as a starter? Maybe not a good idea. Goretzka looking good again and maybe getting his form back? What a terrible performance, we need Pavlović. Musiala, Müller and Sané are working well together? All three were really bad today.

Everyone knows that the Bundesliga race is over, but facing a strong and in form Arsenal in London next week playing this bad and with most positions facing doubts? Not a good sign for the Bavarians hopes of “saving” the season with a strong run in the Champions League.

BEST BAYERN PLAYER OF THE MATCH:

Mats Hummels, the veteran center back was everywhere and stopped at least 5 dangerous attacks… Oh, a current Bayern player? Hard task… I would maybe go with Gnabry just because he wasn’t terrible and didn’t have a long stay on the pitch.

BAYERN “REALLY NEED IMPROVEMENT” PLAYER:

Davies, Goretzka, Laimer…pick your poison. On a really bad day by basically the whole team, these three players managed to be even worse. The midfield pair managed to not create any dangerous chances at the same time that they didn’t defend, and Davies, considering all the shortcomings in defense and losing half of his dribbles managed to squander probably the best chance of the first half.
