The Sky Blues could potentially receive less money from his future sale, after a fresh update emerged.

Sporting Lisbon could be willing to cash in on former Coventry City Viktor Gyokeres for just £63 million, which is £20m short of his release clause in Portugal.

This is according to the Telegraph, who have delivered an update that will be of particular interest to the Championship club, who included a sell-on clause in the deal that saw the Swedish international make the move to Sporting.

The Sky Blues took a fairly brave decision to sign him permanently back in 2021, considering he hadn't pulled up any trees during his previous loan spell with the club.

But this decision paid dividends for Mark Robins' side, who richly benefitted from his contributions during his two seasons at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Getting well into double figures for goals during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, he established himself as one of the best strikers in the Championship, and it seemed inevitable that he would leave the Sky Blues following their play-off final loss against Luton Town last year.

He had just one year left on his contract at the CBS Arena at that time - and it looked unlikely that he would put pen to paper on fresh terms with the club remaining in the English second tier.

Making the move to Sporting for a fee of around £17m provided Robins with the opportunity to bring in some decent replacements.

The Portuguese side have also richly benefitted from the deal, with Gyokeres continuing to be a real asset in front of goal.

His hat-trick against Manchester City in midweek could allow him to attract even more interest than he's currently getting.

Viktor Gyokeres price tag update emerges as Coventry City keep close tabs

It has been reported by the Telegraph that Premier League clubs are on high alert after it emerged that Gyokeres may be available for just £63m next summer.

This is £20m short of his €100 million (£83m) release clause - and it looks as though the club is willing to let him go for lower despite the fact he's scoring regularly and his contract doesn't expire until the summer of 2028.

Coventry inserted a sell-on clause into the deal that saw him make the move to Sporting - believed to be 10% - and that means they are in line to receive a seven-figure fee when he's sold.

But with Gyokeres' current side considering selling him for just £63m, Coventry may end up securing a lower windfall than they previously thought they would get.

Viktor Gyokeres success will please Coventry City in two ways

Coventry will be delighted about his success because they will want to see their former player do well.

He didn't leave the CBS Arena on bad terms and Coventry fans will be proud to say that they played a big part in shaping his career, with the forward now arguably one of the best players in the world.

The player is scoring goals at an incredible rate and everyone associated with the Sky Blues will want to see him progress as much as possible.

They will also be happy to see him do well because that will only help to push up his price tag.

If he can continue scoring at a similar rate, teams may be prepared to bypass any negotiations with Sporting and trigger his release clause, which would be good news for Robins' side because that will allow them to spend more in the transfer market.
