Bayern’s João Palhinha won the UEFA Nations League on his home ground on Sunday after Portugal beat Spain 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena. The midfielder was an unused substitute in the final, having featured briefly in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Germany in the semi-final, which was also played in Munich.
Spain twice went ahead during regular time through Martín Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal, but Portugal levelled each time, first through Nuno Mendes, who then set up Cristiano Ronaldo. With no more goals by the 120th minute, the final went to penalties, where Diogo Costa saved Álvaro Morata’s spot-kick as the Portuguese all held their nerve to win the Nations League for the second time.
Earlier in the day, Michael Olise scored as France earned bronze with a 2-0 win over a team Germany featuring his Bayern teammates Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlović and Serge Gnabry.
Germany started well in Stuttgart but couldn’t convert their opportunities into a goal. Kylian Mbappé then struck for France on the stroke of half-time. Les Bleus’ captain set up the second after sprinting past Robin Koch and squaring for Olise, who had come off the bench, to wrap things up with six minutes to go.
While Pavlović and Sané were rested, Kimmich and Goretzka both started the game, with Gnabry entering the fray in the 78th minute. New Bayern defender Jonathan Tah also played from the off, while fellow new arrival Tom Bischof from Hoffenheim was given his senior international debut in the second half.
