Today we look at the two current Bayern players who have already won the competition twice, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller.

Two legends, one goal at third Club World Cup

Neuer and Müller are among the few players to have won the FIFA Club World Cup twice, lifting the 2013 and 2020 editions in Morocco and Qatar respectively. The pair of Bayern legends are now about to compete in the competition for a third time as Germany’s record champions target more international silverware in the USA this summer.

For Müller, this tournament is about more than just a sporting challenge. It’s the final chapter in his remarkable Bayern adventure, and the 35-year-old will want to end his unparalleled career with his boyhood club by lifting a third Club World Cup. “It features successful teams from many countries with good qualities. There are also the top European teams. There’s real quality in this tournament but also variety,” Müller explained.

Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer were involved in Bayern’s first Club World Cup win in 2013.

Neuer and Müller both started as Bayern beat Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the 2013 final in Marrakesh, but only the goalkeeper played in the 1-0 final win over Tigres in Qatar in early 2021. Müller had featured in the semi against Al Ahly but was forced to return home after a positive Covid-19 test.

The number two doesn’t just represent the two titles the pair have won on the global stage but also their joint legacy. Two friends, two leaders, two faces of Bayern who are ready to make history for a third time. “I’m looking forward to sampling the atmosphere there for the first time,” Müller said, before adding, “And in the best case we return home from this first big Club World Cup as winners, then I hope we have the feeling that we’ve achieved something really great again as a team.”

Müller and Neuer are hoping to bring down the curtain on their remarkable career together at Bayern with more glory at the Club World Cup.
