Despite being in the thick of both EURO 2024 and Copa América, the news cycle doesn’t stop turning. Let’s get into some of the biggest stories from North America in the last week.
The Colorado Rapids have permanently signed striker Rafael Navarro from Brazilian giants Palmeiras, the club announced Thursday.
The 24-year-old has been on loan at the club but has now committed to making the permanent move to Denver through the 2027 season.
Navarro has logged 11 goals and three assists in 20 appearances this season, playing a key role in the Rapids’ resurgence under Chris Armas.
New United States boss Emma Hayes has named her full roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris this summer.
Most notably, legendary forward Alex Morgan was left out of the squad.
“I’m disappointed about not having the opportunity to represent our country on the Olympic stage,” Morgan said. “This will always be a tournament that is close to my heart and I take immense pride any time I put on the crest. In less than a month, I look forward to supporting this team and cheering them on alongside the rest of our country.”
According to reports in the United States, FC Cincinnati is willing to pay up to $15 million for Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie.
The Athletic reported earlier in the summer contract talks broke down between McKennie and Juventus, and the midfield man could be on the move.
The Colorado Rapids man has impressed while on duty with Canada at Copa América, resulting in interest from abroad.
According to the Athletic, Ligue 1 side Lyon saw a bid of $4 million rejected by the Rapids.
“I haven’t heard anything more than interest, Rapids boss Chris Armas said. “I’ll leave it up to them (the Rapids front office) to figure out what’s the magic number and how much real interest there is.”
The San Jose Earthquakes fired head coach Luchi Gonzalez, the club announced earlier this week. The Quakes are bottom of MLS with just 11 points after 19 games.
“I want to thank ownership, leadership and our fans for the opportunity and the support they gave me during my time managing the Earthquakes,” Gonzalez said.
“I am very grateful to all the staff and players that worked hard every day to improve our situation and wish them the very best moving forward. I plan to take some time with my family to reflect and prepare for the next step in my journey.”
