Manchester United are preparing to enter decisive talks with Espanyol over goalkeeper Joan Garcia, as reported by CaughtOffside. Despite Barcelona currently leading the chase, United are hoping to stage a late intervention in what could prove a significant step in their summer rebuild under Ruben Amorim.
United’s interest in the 24-year-old Spaniard comes amid growing doubts over Andre Onana’s long-term future at Old Trafford. Since his arrival, Onana has failed to fully convince, with a series of inconsistent displays raising questions about his suitability as United’s number one.
According to CaughtOffside, “the club are hoping to hold talks in the next few days about a possible deal,” as they look to strengthen between the sticks. The Red Devils are believed to be advancing their interest more actively than any other Premier League rival at this stage.

Despite United’s growing urgency, Barcelona remain in pole position to secure Garcia’s signature. The CaughtOffside report cautions that “Barcelona remain the favourites for the moment,” though the player himself “has still not given a final green light for the move.”
This hesitancy presents a narrow window for United to capitalise, and potentially steal a march on other suitors. Garcia, currently plying his trade at Espanyol, has attracted widespread admiration across Europe thanks to a string of impressive performances in La Liga.
His €25m release clause is unlikely to deter any serious contender, and if United move swiftly, they may yet convince Garcia that Old Trafford is the right place for the next stage of his development.
Garcia’s stock has risen steadily, with multiple Premier League clubs showing interest. CaughtOffside previously reported that “Arsenal are long-term admirers of Garcia,” although he would almost certainly arrive at the Emirates as backup.
Manchester City and Newcastle have also been linked, but it is United who are doing “most to advance their interest as things stand.” Given Garcia’s age and potential, the race is far from over, and United must act decisively if they are to secure his signature.
Since David de Gea’s departure, United have lacked a truly elite, commanding presence in goal. While Onana arrived with high expectations, his time in Manchester has so far been underwhelming.
As CaughtOffside states, “Garcia looks like he’d be a huge upgrade on Onana.” At just 24, the Spaniard has both the talent and time to develop into a world-class goalkeeper. His performances at Espanyol have suggested a calmness under pressure, strong shot-stopping ability and excellent distribution – all key attributes for a modern ‘keeper.
United’s urgency stems from more than just poor performances – it’s a reflection of a broader desire to restore the club’s stature across Europe. In Garcia, they may have found a player who can anchor that ambition.
From a hopeful Manchester United fan’s perspective, this pursuit of Joan Garcia is exactly the kind of ambition we want to see under Ruben Amorim. Onana came in with pedigree but hasn’t fully adapted to the demands of English football. If there’s a chance to upgrade, especially with someone as promising as Garcia, it’s one we should seize.
The €25m release clause is particularly enticing. In today’s market, that’s a steal for a player with his upside. Barcelona’s interest is real, but so is their crowded goalkeeping situation. If Garcia wants to play, United might actually offer the more compelling project right now – new manager, long-term rebuild, and the chance to become a vital part of a revitalised squad.
It’s also encouraging to see the club acting proactively. Too often we’ve been reactive in transfer windows, letting top talent slip away. Amorim’s influence might be pushing the club toward more aggressive and strategic planning.
If we can land Garcia and get him integrated during pre-season, it sends a message that United are rebuilding with purpose. We might not be back at the top yet, but moves like this are how we get there.
