“Indeed, it is an indescribable emotion; it is a pride to be part of this team and train with players of this calibre,” Leoni said.

The ex-Parma defender revealed he had spoken with Gattuso during the summer but didn’t expect to be called up to the senior national team.

“No, I have to be honest, but I am truly happy. It means a lot to hear these words from the coach who has had a very important career. I will have to show on the field what I can do to help the team,” he said.

“I still had to get used to Liverpool, but I had spoken with the coach during the summer, we had a conversation, and I was called up. I was very happy and proud to be here.”

Two Italy World Cup winners have coached Leoni, Andrea Pirlo at Sampdoria and Gattuso with the Azzurri.

“I reviewed some videos, it’s truly special to be coached by such champions, it’s a pleasure and an honour,” he admitted.

The new Liverpool signing is also getting valuable advice from two veterans who work alongside him for club and country.

It is no secret that his new Liverpool teammate Van Dijk was his idol as a kid.

“It has always been Van Dijk,” confirmed Leoni.

“Now, I can play alongside him and share the locker room, he is an exceptional person and a phenomenal player.”

Bonucci, on the other hand, is part of Gattuso’s staff.

“We spoke, and he gave me some advice on the field,” Leoni concluded.

“He was a great defender, and I have always enjoyed watching him because of his leadership and his style of playing with the ball at his feet. His advice is always welcome.”
