Olivier Giroud (38) has played his final match for Los Angeles FC. The Frenchman will join Lille OSC on a free transfer, having agreed to a mutual contract termination with the MLS side. He leaves the US with a disappointing goal-scoring record, that is at least according to his own manager.

When Giroud left AC Milan to join LAFC last summer, it was not expected that he would return to play in Europe. Having left the continent and called time on his international career, he was expected to see out the rest of his playing days in the USA.

However, the goals have not flowed for the Frenchman in California. In 37 appearances, he has netted just five goals. Speaking ahead of the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Montpellier HSC’s departure for Lille, LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo expressed disappointment in how the move turned out.

“We thank him for all of his knowledge and his experience that he openly shared with LAFC and, of course, for his efforts on the pitch. He may not have done as much as we expected when he arrived in terms of goals. We feel as though he didn’t fully adapt to the way that the team plays and that, in a different system, he may have performed better,” Cherundolo said in a press conference.

Giroud added, “I would like to have had more of an impact on the team, on the results. At the end of the day, it was a good experience.”
