Cheltenham striker George Miller could be available for transfer as the Robins look to cut costs, and Grimsby should consider a summer swoop
Grimsby Town supporters are eagerly awaiting news of further arrivals as boss David Artell looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 2025/26 League Two campaign, and could find reinforcements in the forward area from a League Two rival.
With strikers Donovan Wilson and Rekeil Pyke having been released, and loanee attackers Justin Obikwu, Luca Barrington, and Jayden Luker all returning to their respective parent clubs, the Mariners find themselves short of numbers up top, with just Danny Rose and youngster Cameron Gardner contracted to the club at this point.
That leaves room for Artell to bring in the sort of pace, physique, and variety Grimsby were lacking at times last year as they just missed out on a play-off place, ultimately finishing in ninth position.
The addition of former Altrincham wide player Justin Amaluzor has hinted at the Mariners chief acknowledging that lack of genuine speed, power, and energy in certain quaters last time out, and it's something that will require continued refinement over the coming weeks and months.
The recruitment team at Blundell Park may therefore have been interested to learn of some potential developments coming out of a fellow fourth-tier side which may provide a solution to their quest.
Grimsby will likely need to bring in a minimum of two forwards before the start of next season, and while they have shown a willingness to pay fees for players in recent years, they look to recruit in a more efficient way than some of their bigger-spending opponents.
With this in mind, news revealed by Gloucestershire Live journalist and Cheltenham Town correspondent Jon Palmer may be music to the Mariners' ears.
Palmer took to X to reveal the Robins may be seeking to offload striker George Miller due to 'budgetary constraints', with the hardworking attacker seemingly perfect for Artell's pressing style.
The 26-year-old Miller, who joined the Robins from Doncaster Rovers last year, is an experienced operator in League Two, and had a decent season last time out under Michael Flynn, netting 11 times in 46 appearances in all competitions.
The striker, who still has room to improve further, is physically and technically competent, while his non-stop running style often unsettles opposing defenders, making him a good foil for a strike partner, or effective when working alone as the sole frontman, whichever system Grimsby opts to use on a game-by-game basis.
The striker's unexpected availability at this time is sure to draw the attention of many clubs in League Two, and Artell and co should waste no time in declaring their interest in the former Bury youngster.
The Bolton-born striker has spent much of his career to date in and around the Lancashire and Yorkshire regions, having started out at Bury, before spending time with the likes of Bradford, Barnsley, and Middlesbrough, among others.
He's also played for some of the Mariners' regional rivals, too, turning out for Scunthorpe United, and more recently, Doncaster Rovers before his move to the Robins a year ago.
Given Miller's history, it seems Grimsby's location is one that could suit the striker, should he choose to move back north, and while there may be a fee involved as he remains under contract at Whaddon Road, it would be a shrewd acquisition for Artell and the Mariners, if they pursue a transfer.
The Blundell Park outfit will be looking at improvements at both ends of the pitch, as they look to tighten up a somewhat leaky defence, while adding a more all-round threat going forward. Bringing in Miller, Cheltenham's leading scorer last season, would certainly help achieve the latter.
