Huddersfield Town manager Lee Grant has given his reaction after the club completed the signing of Millwall defender Murray Wallace.
Huddersfield Town manager Lee Grant believes new signing Murray Wallace will bring experience and versatility to his squad after the defender completed a return to the club.
Wallace first joined Huddersfield from Scottish side Falkirk in January 2012, and he scored four goals and provided one assist in 60 appearances for the club before departing for Scunthorpe United in January 2016.
After two-and-a-half years with the Iron, Wallace made the move to Millwall in the summer of 2018, and he was a regular for much of his seven-year spell at The Den, but having made just 12 appearances last season, with only three of those coming after the arrival of manager Alex Neil in December, he was released at the end of his contract this summer.
Wallace attracted plenty of interest after becoming a free agent, with Blackpool and Bradford City both said to have been keen, but the Terriers have beaten their League One rivals to the defender, who has signed a two-year contract at the John Smith's Stadium.
The 32-year-old is Town's sixth signing of what has been an incredibly busy start to the summer, and he has followed Joe Low, Sean Roughan, Josh Feeney, Ryan Ledson and Marcus Harness in making the switch to West Yorkshire.
After Wallace's return to Huddersfield was confirmed, Grant expressed his delight at his latest addition, and he claimed that the defender will bring crucial experience and leadership qualities to the club, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, as well as adding useful versatility to the squad with his ability to play at either centre-back or left-back.
"We’re really pleased to have Murray join our evolving defensive unit, and it’s especially pleasing that he’s another new face that will be alongside us from day one of pre-season later this week," Grant told the club's official website.
"A committed defender who clearly knows what it means to represent the Club already, the experience and leadership qualities he possesses are also going to be an asset for us.
"Having introduced a number of younger defenders into the side already this summer as we continue to maximise potential and invest in the future of our squad, Murray’s voice will be key both at the back and in the dressing room.
"Another versatile player who’s comfortable in multiple roles across the back, Murray continues to allow us to be tactically flexible and adaptable, which is important ahead of a long season to come and different styles of opponent to face."
Wallace said that it was a "brilliant feeling" to be back at the John Smith's Stadium, insisting that it was an "easy decision" to make to re-join the Terriers, and he revealed that Grant's "clarity and confidence" about his style of play was a "huge appeal".
Grant has spoken about his desire to get much of Huddersfield's transfer business done early in the summer ahead of pre-season, and owner Kevin Nagle has certainly provided his new manager with strong backing so far.
The Terriers conceded 55 goals in League One last season, which is far too many for a side aiming to challenge for promotion, but after the arrivals of Low, Roughan and Feeney, Wallace's return is another huge boost for Grant as he looks to tighten up the defence.
Wallace is unlikely to be the last new addition at the John Smith's Stadium this summer, and it has been claimed that Town are set to make an ambitious £2.5 million bid for Leyton Orient midfielder Ethan Galbraith, so there could be much more exciting transfer activity to come.
