Eric Dier (31) has barely arrived at AS Monaco, however, he could be about to take on more responsibility. The Englishman joined the Principality club from Bayern Munich at the start of the summer on a free transfer.
He has quickly settled and has been a staple at the back during pre-season. Unsurprisingly, he started Monaco’s Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre AC at the weekend, and even netted in the 3-1 win. It was Denis Zakaria (28) who captained Les Monégasques in that encounter. However, in the wake of that result, the Swiss international has been linked with a shock departure.
As per L’Équipe, Al-Ahli are in talks to acquire the midfielder’s services for a €45m fee. His departure would leave a big void to fill in the Monaco midfield, but there is also the question of the captaincy. Despite his role as vice-captain, Thilo Kehrer didn’t start against Le Havre. Dier and Christian Mawissa look to be the two starting centre-backs. As a result, should Zakaria leave, it may be Dier that inherits the captain’s armband.
