CAN Féminine 2024: Ghana knocks out Algeria on penalties and advances to the final four
The Ghana women's team knocked out Algeria on penalties (4-2) this Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Berkane during the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. Both teams delivered a fiercely contested but goalless match over 120 minutes (0-0), before the Black Queens clinched their ticket to the semi-finals against Morocco.
The Black Queens of Ghana and Algeria's Greens faced off this afternoon at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane, each vying for a spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women's AFCON. For two hours, the two sides tested each other relentlessly without finding a breakthrough.
As early as the 3rd minute, Princess Marfo tried to open the scoring, but narrowly missed the target, while Algeria’s Lina Boussaha had just seen her shot saved by Cynthia Konlan. Both teams kept pressing forward. Algeria, without their star Naïma Bouhani—out with a knee injury—tried to rely on collective play. Ghoutia Karchouni and Marine Dafeur looked threatening but lacked accuracy in the final touch. In the 27th minute, Stella Nyamekye found the back of the Algerian net. The Black Queens’ celebration was short-lived, however, as VAR ruled out the goal for Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah being offside.
That decision completely revived the contest and kept the suspense alive. In the second half, the intensity ramped up. Both squads traded spells of dominance but couldn’t find the breakthrough. The 30 minutes of extra time offered high-quality action with several heated moments.

Forced to settle the tie from the spot, the Ghanaians kept their nerve impressively. Josephine Bonsu, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Evelyn Badu all converted their attempts with composure. For Algeria, only Sofia Guellati and Laura Muller found the net, while Marine Dafeur and Inès Belloumou saw their penalties denied by the brilliant Cynthia Konlan. The shootout ended 4-2 in Ghana’s favor, sending them through to the semi-finals. Algeria bows out after a historic run to the quarter-finals.
