Barcelona have parted company with coach Ronald Koeman.

Koeman’s last match in charge was Wednesday’s LaLiga clash with Rayo Vallecano and the former player leaves the club after just over 13 months in charge.

“FC Barcelona has dismissed Ronald Koeman as coach of the first team tonight,” read the club statement. “The president of the club, Joan Laporta, has informed him after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad this Thursday at the Ciudad Deportiva.”

FC Barcelona wants to thank the services rendered to the entity and wishes him good luck in his career.”

Koeman took over at Camp Nou from Quique Setién in August 2020 and guided the Blaugrana to a disappointing third-placed finish in his only full season in charge.

The club’s perilous financial situation meant they endured a tumultuous summer in 2021, with Lionel Messi leaving to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Koeman was able to add the likes of Memphis Depay and Sergio Agüero to his squad, but an underwhelming start to the new season meant president Joan Laporta reportedly lost faith in the Dutchman.

It is not yet known who will succeed Koeman but club legend Xavi and Belgium boss Roberto Martínez have both been linked with the job.
