Atlético Madrid have confirmed that Luis Suárez has suffered a muscle injury.
The club’s top goalscorer felt pain during Wednesday’s training session and had to undergo medical tests which confirmed the damage to his left leg.
It has not yet been confirmed how long the 34-year-old will be out but it is expected he could be sidelined for a number of weeks.
This is a massive blow to Diego Simeone, who has seen his side be caught up by Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga.
Los Rojiblancos now have only a one point lead over Barça following the 1-0 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday.
Losing Suárez would be another dent in their title hopes with the summer signing having scored 19 league goals so far this season.
