Chelsea cruised past Paris Saint Germain 3 - 0 to lift the inaugural expanded Club World cup held in the U.S. However the spotlight quickly shifted away from the players and onto unexpected guest U.S President Donald Trump.
In candid interview with Gerard Romero, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella revealed how uncomfortable the moment became.
"We were told Trump would present the trophy and we couldn’t lift it until he left. But he just stayed"
Despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s repeated attempts to move Trump off the stage, he remained next to Reece James as the trophy was lifted.
Cucurella added:
"He looked at us and said: Lift the trophy, I’ll stay here. No one dared say word. Honestly, I was terrified"
Palmer: "What Is He Doing?"
Final hero Cole Palmer who scored twice, was equally surprised.
"I knew he’d be there but not on stage during the lift. I was confused. I even said: What's he doing?"
Chelsea’s historic triumph was meant to be moment of pure football joy. Instead the post match celebration was overshadowed by controversial & unwanted cameo leaving players and fans with mixed emotions.
