On Sunday’s edition of Last Word on Spurs, journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have made a move to sign Lille playmaker Angel Gomes who will become a free agent soon. Jacobs said,

“Gomes is another possibility, and Tottenham have made an offer.

“What I’ve heard in the last kind of 48 hours is that Tottenham have grown in confidence that their offer might be accepted.”

Gomes’ Unimpressive Season In Ligue 1

Gomes struggled to find consistency with his performances for Lille in the previous campaign. The English attacker was involved in 20 matches for the French club last season, scoring a couple of goals and earning one assist in multiple competitions.

The 24-year-old struggled to impress in the final third as he averaged 0.98 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 and kept only 25% of his attempts on target. However, he was tidy when distributing possession in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 81% in the French first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the French club will expire at the end of this month which could open the door for Tottenham to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Is Gomes A Decent Choice For Tottenham Hotspur?

Gomes is a good dribbler with the ball and can create some decent plays for his teammates to find the back of the net when he is playing well on the field. However, he needs to figure out a way to be more consistent in front of the opposition goal.

The English sensation is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if needed. He played in five Premier League matches during his time at Man United but is still quite inexperienced at the highest level.

Gomes has what it takes to serve as a good, rotational piece in Tottenham‘s match-day squad. His versatility makes him a decent choice for Spurs to consider this off-season.

At 24, Gomes has still got a lot of room to grow as a footballer. However, the North London club need to offer him some time before they can get the best out of him in English football.
