It’s no secret that Timothée Chalamet is a huge sports fan. The Franco-American actor who shot to stardom in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and cemented his stardom in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptations caught the attention of AS Saint-Étienne supporters when he professed his love for Les Verts during an interview with Quotidien.
His support for Saint-Étienne was even briefly capitalised on by an American clothing company earlier this year. Forever 21 sold Saint-Étienne branded shirts albeit not in Les Verts’ colours to the French city’s bemusement.
In a recent interview with music journalist Nardwuar the Human Serviette, Chalamet was asked about his childhood obsession with the team. The actor mentioned his love for Bafétimbi Gomis and Dimitri Payet, stating “I used to chase the team [by bike]… Payet it was that generation of players. I’m a big Saint-Étienne fan they’re probably the team I support the most in the world, better than New York Knicks.”
It’s not been a great season for Les Verts who have struggled near the bottom of the table since earning promotion back to Ligue 1 via the playoffs. Head coach Olivier Dall’Oglio was relieved of his duties on the 14th of December and was replaced by Eirik Horneland.
