In a summer where Manchester City are determined to act swiftly and decisively, several positions of Pep Guardiola’s squad need strengthening. One of those appears to be the goalkeeper position. Ederson’s future at the Etihad remains in doubt. If the Brazilian international does depart Manchester City as expected, City will need to sign a new goalkeeper. One player who has been linked with a move to Manchester City is Espanyol’s impressive young goalkeeper Joan Garcia. There is a race to sign Garcia unfolding and Manchester City are in the thick of it.
A report from Ruairidh Barlow for Football Espana states that there is a €25 million release clause in Joan Garcia’s contract with Espanyol. In the current transfer market that fee represents a bargain. Barlow further reports that Barcelona, Newcastle and Manchester City have all submitted offers to Joan Garcia. Each club is awaiting a decision from Garcia over his future as per Barlow’s report.
Spanish publication SPORT has now reported that Newcastle are now out of the race to sign Joan Garcia. As per the SPORT report, it is now a race between Manchester City and Barcelona to sign the Espanyol goalkeeper. SPORT further reports that Joan Garcia is analysing all offers carefully in consultation with his family. It is expected that a decision over his future will arrive from Joan Garcia early next week.
All Manchester City can do now is wait for a decision from Joan Garcia over his future. They’ve made their pitch to the Espanyol keeper and that’s all they can do. Barcelona have also already made theirs. It would seem that Newcastle United are out of the race to sign Garcia. So it may now be a battle between Manchester City and Barcelona to sign Garcia. Although, it must be said that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a new suitor emerge to sign Garcia. Especially given the release clause in his contract which represents such good value.
But Manchester City are in the race to sign one of the best young keepers in Europe. A report from Spanish publication GOL indicates that Joan Garcia is leaning towards a move to the Premier League. That may swing the race to sign him in Manchester City’s favour. A report from respected Barcelona reporter Reshad Rahman also gives the same impression. But that fact could change as Rahman further reports. It is now a waiting game to see who wins the race to sign Joan Garcia. But Manchester City are in the race based on all of the available evidence.
