“That’s what the stats say” – Mikel Arteta questions Manchester City’s latest Premier League title triumph | OneFootball

Manchester City’s most recent Premier League title triumph has been questioned by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City surpassed the 90-point mark and finished two points ahead of Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title in May, as the Gunners suffered heartache for a second successive season.

Manchester City clinched their fourth consecutive Premier League title, retaining the trophy after a 3-1 win over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium, courtesy of Phil Foden’s first-half brace and Rodri’s second-half strike.

A sixth Premier League title in seven years came alongside silverware successes in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup for the Sky Blues, as Guardiola extended his Manchester City trophy tally to 17.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal won 28 Premier League matches during the season, but the Blues’ impressive unbeaten streak from early December proved decisive, as the north London club faltered against Aston Villa.

City, who haven’t lost a Premier League game since a 1-0 loss at Villa Park in early December, also failed to beat the Gunners during the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign, suffering defeats in the FA Community Shield and at the Emirates Stadium, as well as being held to a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in March.

Arteta’s last Premier League title came during his time with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, where the Spaniard worked with Guardiola’s first-team as an assistant coach prior to moving to north London.

Arteta has revealed frustration around the title race last season however, telling ESPN: “When you are analytical and you gather all the stats and everything the team has done over the past 11 months in the Premier League, we should have won it. That’s what the stats say.

“The reality is that we didn’t so there is something that is there that we haven’t managed as well as Man City or other clubs in the past. I think we understand where those margins are. I think we have come very far.

“Now we have to continue to do all the right things that we are doing and just make those small margins that are going to be able to win the tournaments. ”

Arsenal and Manchester City are likely to battle for the title again next season, with the two teams scheduled to meet in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium in September.
