Southampton are preparing to get their return to the Championship underway as the 2025/26 campaign looms closer.

With new manager Will Still taking charge, there is a renewed sense of optimism at St. Mary’s, following the club’s woeful attempt at achieving Premier League survival last term.

Promotion is expected to be hotly contested for in the second-tier next year, with Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Sheffield United all expected to be gunning for the title.

Extra additions during the latter portion of the window can prove to be crucial over 46 games, with that injection of quality often paying dividends.

Football League World’s Southampton fan pundit, Martin Sanders, has highlighted one deal the Saints should look to make in the coming weeks to give them an extra edge next term.

Southampton told to capture Coventry City man

“I’d be quite interested in a move for Jack Rudoni at Coventry City,” said Martin. “He could be a realistic signing.

Southampton are in a slightly better position than Coventry City, not by a huge amount, but we are newly relegated, have loads of money, enjoy parachute payments.

“We’ve got a good chance of going back up to the Premier League and I think he'd be a really good fit for us.

“We need a creative midfielder, but when you talk about bringing new players in, if we keep Mateus Fernandes, he'd be like a new signing himself.

“So, I think that Rudoni should be someone we are looking at; he would be brilliant for the Saints.”

Jack Rudoni would be a sensible signing for Southampton, but Coventry City hurdle could prove too difficult

Rudoni’s first season with Coventry City was impressive to say the least, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists in 43 Championship appearances.

The 24-year-old played a huge part in the Sky Blues’ late-season push into the play-offs and will naturally have alerted the attention of some of the division’s leading sides.

Rudoni has proven himself to be an outstanding operator at the second-tier level and has developed consistently over the past few years, so he wouldn’t represent much of a risk for Southampton.

However, Frank Lampard and Co. are extremely unlikely to be willing to sell the playmaker and would need to be offered a king’s ransom to do so.

There’s no doubt that Rudoni would perform for Southampton, but getting Coventry to sell him would be the main challenge if Still wanted to acquire the midfielder’s services.
