FLW's Coventry City fan pundit has given his verdict on Luis Binks' departure from the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Luis Binks has completed his move away from Coventry City after two years with the club.
It has been reported by Tipsbladet that the defender has made the switch to Brondby after a €3 (£2.5) million agreement with the Sky Blues.
The 23-year-old arrived at the CBS Arena in the 2023 summer transfer window, but was unable to cement himself as a key figure in the Championship side.
He featured 40 times in the second tier across two campaigns, with Coventry coming ninth and fifth in the table.
When asked about Binks’ departure, FLW’s Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez wished the player well with the next step in his career.
However, he warned the Sky Blues that some extra defensive cover may need to be signed for the window shuts on 1 September.
“I’m actually really pleased for Binks, I’m glad that he’s got this move away,” Deez told Football League World.
“It just didn’t work out for him for some reason.
“He’s been here for a couple of seasons, never looked that confident, but he’s a young player, he’s got loads of potential definitely.
“We paid £2 million for him, I’m hearing we got £2.5 million back, which is amazing considering that he didn’t exactly improve in his time here.
“Bit of a surprising move, I’d not even seen him linked or rumours of him leaving, especially to a team as big and well known as Brondby.
“Obviously, they’re not a European giant or anything, but they’re a hell of a lot bigger than Coventry.
“Centre-back was already a position that we needed to strengthen, so it’s a little bit surprising to see one of our back-ups leave, but with that good amount of money coming in, there’s got to be a long-term plan, there’s got to be plans for replacements, for new recruits.
“I’m really hoping that we bring in a strong, tough, experienced centre-back.
“I’d love to see somebody like Craig Dawson that’s a free agent and was last at Wolves, so it’s a nice, local move for him.
“But I’m pleased for Binks, I hope it goes well, hope his career kicks on from here.”
Coventry will begin their Championship campaign on 9 August with a clash against Hull City.
Bringing in a fee of £2.5 million for Binks is good work considering he was a secondary option in the side, and it represents a profit on the fee paid to sign him.
But the club will now need to dip into the market to bolster their defensive options, as cover will be needed at the back.
Coventry have had a quiet window this year, which is not a bad thing at all, and holding onto a lot of their more important players will be crucial to sustaining their competitiveness.
