Manchester United have issued a statement on Sekou Kone after the player suffered a serious injury during a meeting with Tamworth.
The contest between United’s under-21s and Tamworth was called off after Kone suffered a serious injury.
In the final minutes of the first half, Kone was floored by a nasty collision while trying to defend a corner at The Lamb Ground.
The referee paused the game as Kone received treatment. He was attended to for over 15 minutes before the midfield talent was stretchered from the field and taken out of the stadium.
Kone made an effort to stand, only to collapse again when it was clear he couldn’t go on. Play was initially suspended and both teams left the field, but the game was later abandoned altogether.
Tamworth wrote on X, “Due to the medical situation, we are forced to abandon tonight’s fixture, details will be revealed in due course.”
“We would like to wish safe travels to all the Man United fans, staff and players.”
“We especially wish Sekou Kone a speedy recovery.”
United have now provided a positive fitness update on Kone.
A club statement read, “Manchester United’s National League Cup game at Tamworth was abandoned close to the end of the first half.”
“The tie was halted due to a head injury suffered by Reds midfielder Sekou Kone, inside his own box, and the youngster was taken off on a stretcher.”
“We can confirm Sekou is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team.”
“He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks. Everybody at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.”
