Fabrizio Romano has assured Manchester United fans that, as things stand, the club remain in pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres.

There was contact between the Red Devils and Gyokeres’ entourage last week to gauge his situation and how it had been developing since the window opened.

Romano confirmed that United are firmly ‘in the race’ for his signature (via GiveMeSport), along with Arsenal and numerous Serie A clubs. Currently, there seems to be no front-runner, with his future still hugely undecided.

The United faithful thought their chances of signing Gyokeres were dead and buried after the side failed to secure Champions League qualification following their UEL final defeat last month. While it may have scuppered the prospect somewhat, it’s not entirely off the table, and the fact that his former manager Ruben Amorim is in control at Old Trafford could well bode in the Reds’ favour.

Arsenal pose a considerable threat given that they can offer him UCL minutes next season, but they are seemingly prioritising a move for a younger alternative in the form of Benjamin Sesko.

Why United are unrelenting in their pursuit of Gyokeres

Gyokeres, 27, has previously been deemed the ‘hottest striker in Europe’ by ESPN journalist Mark Ogden — and it’s no wonder why.

This campaign alone, the Sweden international notched 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting Lisbon, playing an influential role in the club pipping arch-rivals Benfica to the league title for the second successive season.

He made 68 appearances under Amorim in 2023/2024 and 2024/2025, returning 66 goals and 19 assists in that time.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Gyokeres could replicate such unfathomable goalscoring form in a league as difficult to conquer as England’s top flight is. The fact he’s available for a cut-price fee of just £54 million makes it an almost impossible opportunity to turn down, though.
