Newcastle Step Up Interest in Dortmund Duo Gittens and Kobel

Scouts Watch Dortmund as Transfer Plans Accelerate

Newcastle United’s recruitment team has been closely monitoring Borussia Dortmund in recent weeks, with two standout names now emerging from their latest scouting missions: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Gregor Kobel.

The Magpies, keen to bolster their squad this summer, have prioritised strengthening in goal and out wide. While Burnley’s James Trafford remains their leading target at £30 million, contingency plans are actively being explored—and Kobel has caught the eye.

Kobel’s Credentials Make Him a Genuine Contender

At 27, Kobel is entering his prime and brings significant experience at the highest level, including in the Champions League. The Swiss international kept clean sheets in both group stage fixtures against Newcastle last autumn, performances that did not go unnoticed within the club’s hierarchy.

He also shares international duties with Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schär, which may aid a potential transition. Though no formal bid has yet been tabled, the Magpies are understood to have returned positive reports to decision-makers regarding Kobel’s temperament, reflexes, and leadership.

With Trafford’s fee set high and other clubs circling, Newcastle are carefully weighing up their options.

Gittens Sparks Premier League Scramble

While the search for a keeper continues, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is another name gaining serious traction. The 20-year-old winger has impressed with 12 goals across 34 starts this season, and his attacking versatility makes him an appealing asset. Comfortable on either flank or in a central role, his adaptability is seen as a major plus.

Gittens has long been on the radar of Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and Arsenal both tracking the England Under-21 international. However, Newcastle’s sustained interest is gathering momentum—particularly with Dortmund’s Champions League status hanging in the balance.

The winger is protected by a release clause that currently sits at £50 million, though that figure is set to drop significantly if Dortmund fail to secure qualification for Europe’s elite competition.

“I spoke to him after a Dortmund game a couple of seasons back and he was engaging and bright,” a source familiar with his early career noted. “My colleagues in Germany were very excited about his potential and his development has led to interest from Europe’s top sides.”

Swap Deal Talk Involving Barnes and Ramsey Resurfaces

In parallel, Newcastle’s interest in Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey continues to percolate, and it has again opened the door to speculation around a potential swap deal involving Harvey Barnes.

Initial discussions, Confidential understands, were initiated by Villa in January as they sought solutions to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) before June’s deadline. At the time, Barnes was out of Eddie Howe’s side and later suffered a thigh injury that ended any immediate movement.

While no fresh negotiations are believed to be underway, chatter around a player exchange has not dissipated entirely. Newcastle admire Ramsey’s dynamic midfield profile, while Villa still appreciate Barnes’ ability to impact games in the final third.

The coming weeks will prove crucial as Newcastle finalise their summer transfer strategy. With scouting reports piling up and interest building in Germany, all signs point to another high-stakes window on Tyneside.
