The report states that the Lilywhites have made contact with the League One side, as they look to add to their midfield ranks for the season ahead.

The former Morecambe man has featured in 79 league games since moving to Oakwell in the summer of 2022, scoring 20 league goals over the previous two campaigns for the Tykes.

The 26-year-old is said to still have two years left on his deal with the Yorkshire side as it stands, with the club having the option of extending that for another year if they wish.

Preston North End make approach to Barnsley for midfielder Adam Phillips

Phillips has proven to be a key cog in the Barnsley side since making the move from Burnley two years ago, with a string of top performances in the middle of the park for the 22/23 League One playoff finalists.

Having netted ten times in all competitions in his first season at the club, Phillips’ ability to pull the strings alongside Herbie Kane gave his side the cutting edge needed for back-to-back promotion pushes, although they just fell short on both occasions.

The midfielder was shown a red card in the heartbreaking defeat at Wembley to Sheffield Wednesday last year, as Josh Windass’ late header secured promotion for the Owls in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Following that setback, Phillips kicked on in the most recent League One campaign, with a career-best eleven league goals from his 42 appearances, as he further cemented his status as one of the division’s top attacking midfielders.

The former Accrington Stanley loanee netted in the playoff semi-final against Bolton Wanderers last month, but couldn’t avoid his side experiencing another playoff heartache, as the Trotters progressed to Wembley after securing a 5-4 aggregate victory.

With a second successive setback in the hunt for promotion, this summer may see the former Norwich City man look to test himself at a higher level, with North End rumoured to have taken an interest.

Ryan Lowe has turned his attention to Phillips, with Alan Browne’s future as a North End player still up in the air.

The 29-year-old [pictured] has been offered a new deal at Deepdale to extend his stay with the club beyond the summer, but as yet no news has come out about the midfielder’s decision on his future.

With his contract with the club set to elapse this Sunday, the midfielder’s ten-year association with the club could be coming to an end, having amassed over 400 appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions since arriving from Cork City in January 2014.

The Lancashire side also waved goodbye to Ben Woodburn this summer, with the former Liverpool man failing to earn a new contract after two years at the club.

The Welsh international started just one Championship game in the previous campaign, with 19 more appearances from the substitutes’ bench.
