The last week has been bittersweet for New York City FC. The Pigeons won on the road, beating FC Cincinnati 1-0 and shocking fans at TQL Stadium. At the same time, the team’s former captain, Maxime Chanot, announced his retirement due to injury. It is sad to see the center-back leave the game, but sometimes that is life. And for the Boys in Blue, their life is football, and the fight to earn more points and climb up the Eastern Conference Standings continues.
NYCFC will battle it out with D.C. United this weekend, aiming to have better luck against their opposition compared to their previous meeting. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, so the Pigeons will want to continue their recent success and earn another three points. Plus, the team is still in eighth place, so they will want to earn as many points as possible, especially at home.
Meanwhile, D.C. is in last place. So, NYCFC should win, correct? One should not jump to that conclusion so quickly. It is vital to recall that they faced a last-place CF Montréal team twice and lost both matches this season. Therefore, Pascal Jansen must ensure that his players do not fall into the trap of reducing play or believing they will win because they are facing D.C. United.
Rather, the Boys in Blue must approach this game like they are playing Cincinnati. They also need to approach this like it is a playoff game, and really, the rest of their fixtures. If they do that, then NYCFC can climb up the table.
