The signing of Maik Nawrocki was seen as a good bit of business when he was signed from Legia Warsaw last summer.

A big strong young Athletic centre back, he looked like a player with huge potential, and his first few displays seemed to confirm just that, but unfortunately he spent a big chunk of last season failing to put a run of games together because of injury.

This pre season was a chance for him to get fit and fight for a place alongside CCV at the centre of defence. That chance started last night as he was named in the starting line up against Ayr Utd but unfortunately he hobbled off after just twenty minutes.

Afterwards the Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers gave this update on Nawrocki’s latest injury concern: “Maik felt something in his calf so we’ll just have to see what that is tomorrow.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but it again raises questions of his fitness and injury issues that mirrors one of our former centre backs in the not too distant past.

Remember Jozo Simunovic? Yes of course you do. Kenny Miller certainly does! Jozo was a fine player, similar in stature and style to the Pole, but also like Nawrocki he too had his issues when it came to fitness.

Jozo was one of those players who seemed to be made of glass, and was forever picking up knocks. Indeed Jozo is currently without a club due to the issues that have plagued his career. Let’s pray Nawrocki has better fortune than Jozo and he can get a decent run without injury concerns frustrating his progress.

Last night’ latest injury scare was the last thing that Maik needed after a debut season that was frustrating for the player and also the club.
